A New Chapter for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Gene Luen Yang, the Eisner Award-winning creator of the acclaimed graphic novel American Born Chinese, is stepping into a new role as the writer for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic series. This marks a significant shift in the ongoing narrative of the iconic franchise, which has captivated fans for decades.
Yang, known for his work on Superman Smashes the Klan and other notable projects, will take over the writing duties starting with issue no. 13. His involvement brings a fresh perspective to the beloved characters, blending his storytelling expertise with the rich history of the TMNT universe. Yang’s connection to the franchise runs deep; he grew up watching the classic 1980s cartoon with his brother and even reenacted the Turtles’ adventures using action figures. He recalls being "blown away" by the unique blend of martial arts action and imaginative storytelling when he first read an issue of the TMNT comics at a friend's house.
Yang is also acutely aware of the legacy that the TMNT comics have built as pioneers in independent publishing. He acknowledges the contributions of the original creators, Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, who laid the groundwork for future writers and artists. “All of us from that corner of comics owe a huge debt to them,” Yang stated. In fact, the first comic he ever self-published was funded by a grant from Peter Laird’s Xeric Foundation, highlighting the lasting impact of their work.
Freddie E. Williams II, the new artist on the title, brings a wealth of experience to the project. He previously worked on titles such as Batman/TMNT, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, and Godzilla vs Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. This is his first time working on the interiors of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, but he has long been a fan of the franchise. Williams expressed his admiration for the original Mirage comics, which played a crucial role in his love for the comic book medium. He is also inspired by the distinctive art style of Eastman and Laird, which continues to influence the visual identity of the Turtles.
The new storyline will begin with the Turtles reunited and hopeful about the future of the city. However, this optimism is quickly challenged by a dark and personal threat: the deadly new assassin Ujigami. This introduces a new layer of tension and danger to the narrative, setting the stage for an exciting new chapter in the TMNT saga.
To celebrate the launch of the new creative team, IDW Publishing will release a special blind bag variant for collectors. This exclusive edition will feature covers from renowned artists such as Daniel Warren Johnson, David Nakayama, and Clayton Crain. The main cover will be designed by Freddie E. Williams II, while a variant will be created by Dustin Nguyen.
The new issue is scheduled to hit shelves on December 10, with the pre-order deadline set for October 20. Fans can look forward to a fresh and dynamic take on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles story, brought to life by two talented creators who deeply respect the legacy of the franchise.
As the Turtles face new challenges and adversaries, the upcoming issues promise to deliver a mix of action, adventure, and emotional depth. With Yang and Williams at the helm, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series is poised for a thrilling new era that honors its past while embracing the future.
