The Return of the Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel has once again brought back some of its most iconic characters, this time focusing on the veteran members of the Guardians of the Galaxy. As the cosmic conflict intensifies, the team is evolving to meet new challenges, with a particular emphasis on which member holds the greatest power.

Since the Guardians' introduction in 1969, many different characters have taken part in the team's dynamic lineup. While Dan Abnett's 2008 reinvention established a definitive group, other heroes like Kitty Pryde and Agent Venom have made memorable appearances in recent years. Now, as Jonathan Hickman's Imperial event gains momentum, new players are stepping into the cosmic spotlight, and the Guardians of the Galaxy are at the center of it all.

A new version of the Guardians debuts in Marvel’s one-shot comic, Imperial War: Imperial Guardians, which features Dan Abnett returning to the franchise. This iteration of the team does not include Rocket Raccoon, Groot, or Drax. Instead, Gamora leads a powerful lineup that includes Captain Marvel, Brawn, Nighthawk, and the incredibly potent Cosmic Ghost Rider.

Cosmic Ghost Rider: A Powerhouse Among the Guardians

Cosmic Ghost Rider stands out as the most powerful member of the Imperial Guardians. His abilities combine the supernatural strength of the Spirit of Vengeance with the Power Cosmic, making him one of the most formidable figures in Marvel’s cosmic lore. Originally a Punisher from an alternate future, he wields Hellfire manipulation and reality-warping chains capable of binding even the mightiest beings, such as the Hulk and Thanos. He has survived planetary explosions and erased entire armies on his own.

In terms of raw power, Cosmic Ghost Rider surpasses heroes like the Silver Surfer and Thor. Compared to his fellow Guardians, he is leagues ahead. Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel, while one of the most powerful Avengers, is significantly less durable than Cosmic Ghost Rider. Darkhawk, despite his advanced cosmic armor, relies on technology that pales in comparison to Frank Castle’s destructive capabilities. Brawn, though possessing Hulk-like strength and intelligence, still falls short when measured against the cosmic threat of the Ghost Rider.

A New Guardians Team for a Cosmic Crisis

The Imperial conflict has shaken the Marvel Universe to its core, prompting the need for a new Guardians of the Galaxy team. With Star-Lord and Nova occupied with interstellar politics and unraveling the mystery behind J’son’s assassination, Marvel needed a group capable of handling frontline galactic threats. Rather than starting from scratch, Hickman and Abnett have assembled high-powered heroes who can tackle cosmic-level dangers while fitting into the larger narrative of Imperial’s political and military chaos.

This new Guardians team allows the group to remain central to Marvel’s cosmic corner without overshadowing Star-Lord and Nova’s main storyline. Powerhouses like Captain Marvel and Cosmic Ghost Rider could play key roles in uncovering the conspiracy that destabilized the Galactic Council. Brawn, with his prior involvement in the conflict, is also likely to be essential. Together, this version of the Guardians may represent Star-Lord’s direct response to Gladiator’s Superguardians and other empire-backed teams.

What to Expect from Imperial War: Imperial Guardians #1

Imperial War: Imperial Guardians #1 is set to release on October 1, 2025. Written by Dan Abnett and Jonathan Hickman, and featuring art by Cory Smith, the issue promises to deliver a thrilling look at the new Guardians team and their role in the expanding Imperial storyline. As the cosmic war escalates, this new lineup will test the limits of power, strategy, and loyalty in the Marvel Universe.
