Alan Cumming Clarifies Previous Comments About Avengers: Doomsday

Alan Cumming recently addressed his earlier remarks about Avengers: Doomsday with his new co-stars from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As the cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps begins to take shape for Phase 6, the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga is drawing near. Several upcoming films and TV series are set to wrap up this era of the MCU, with Avengers: Doomsday being one of the most anticipated projects.

Currently in production, Avengers: Doomsday is expected to feature a star-studded lineup of major MCU actors. Notably, several X-Men cast members from the Fox-Marvel era are also joining the film, making it one of the biggest crossovers in Marvel history. Cumming, who previously portrayed Nightcrawler in X2, will reprise his role in the upcoming movie alongside the main heroes of the Fantastic Four.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Cumming spoke with Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn ahead of their MCU debuts. The conversation touched on the topic of spoilers, but the discussion quickly turned to Cumming’s previous comments about Avengers: Doomsday. The cast didn’t hesitate to address his remarks, leading to a lighthearted exchange.

Pedro Pascal asked, “Did you get in trouble?” while Vanessa Kirby added, “Did they phone you up?” Cumming responded, “My publicist called me. The wrath of your publicist is not a wrath you want to have.” He then jokingly questioned whether Pascal had actually fought him in the film, noting that the two had never had a fight.

Cumming later clarified that his original comments might have been taken out of context. In a BuzzFeed UK interview from May 7, 2025, he mentioned his return as Nightcrawler and joked about learning stunts for a fight scene. He humorously remarked on how surprising it was to be playing a superhero again at 60 years old, especially after playing the character 23 years ago.

His comments were interpreted by some as suggesting that he would be fighting Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards in Avengers: Doomsday. However, Cumming later suggested that his remark may have been a misunderstanding or an offhand comment, possibly using Pascal as an example rather than a specific reference.

The Impact of Misunderstood Statements

This incident highlights how easily statements from actors can be misinterpreted, especially in the high-profile world of the MCU. There have been numerous instances where actors’ remarks have been taken out of context, leading to speculation and confusion among fans.

While it remains unclear whether there will be conflicts between the X-Men, Avengers, and Fantastic Four in Avengers: Doomsday, it’s not unlikely that initial tensions could arise when these teams first come together. This makes it possible that Cumming’s earlier comment could reflect part of the film’s storyline, even if it was meant as a joke.

What to Expect From Avengers: Doomsday

As the release date for Avengers: Doomsday approaches, fans are eager to learn more about the battles that will unfold between the various hero teams. The film is expected to bring together the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four in a major crossover event, setting the stage for their confrontation with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.

Despite the secrecy surrounding the project, Marvel Studios has managed to keep most details under wraps, which only adds to the anticipation. Fans are hopeful that more information about the film will emerge as production progresses.

With such a massive ensemble cast and a complex storyline, Avengers: Doomsday promises to be one of the most exciting entries in the MCU. Whether or not Cumming’s comments end up reflecting the actual plot, the film is sure to deliver an epic showdown that will leave fans talking for years to come.
