Introducing a New Threat in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Julia Garner recently shared her excitement about taking on a new role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), stating, "This [character] was never told on screen before." Her character, Shalla-Bal, is set to make her live-action debut in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, marking a significant moment for fans of the iconic superhero team.

The latest MCU film brings together a new cast portraying the Fantastic Four. Pedro Pascal plays Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby takes on Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn stars as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach portrays Ben Grimm/the Thing. Unlike traditional origin stories, this film does not focus on the characters discovering their powers. Instead, it assumes they have already been active heroes, facing challenges that require seasoned expertise.

The story introduces two formidable antagonists: Galactus and his herald, the Silver Surfer. These characters previously appeared in 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, but director Matt Shakman aims for a more accurate portrayal based on the comics. This version promises a deeper connection to the source material, offering a fresh take on these cosmic entities.

Galactus, first introduced in 1966 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, is a cosmic entity that consumes planets to sustain itself. In the previous film, he was depicted as an amorphous cloud in space, but Ralph Ineson’s portrayal will align more closely with the comic book version. Ineson describes the character as a "14-billion-year-old cosmic vampire," emphasizing his immense power and detachment from humanity.

"I knew a little bit about it, but I'm blessed with a 25-year-old son who's a Marvel fan and always has been," Ineson explains. "He really knows his stuff, so when I got the job, he turned into this Victorian schoolmaster, put me in MCU bootcamp for a month, watching many movies and everything that was relevant to Galactus and all this, and taking me through various storylines in the comics."

Galactus is supported by the Silver Surfer, whose character has undergone a transformation in this new adaptation. Julia Garner portrays Shalla-Bal, the first-ever live-action version of the character. In the comics, Shalla-Bal and Norrin Radd are lovers from the planet Zenn-La. When Galactus threatened their world, Norrin became his herald to save his beloved. However, their relationship remains complicated, with Shalla-Bal eventually becoming the empress of Zenn-La.

Garner expressed her enthusiasm for the role, noting the unique challenges and opportunities it presents. "Her story's quite tragic, so that's interesting already, and visually it's interesting too," she says. "There's this sense of this ambiguous energy going on of whether she's good or not."

The film also explores the mystery surrounding Shalla-Bal, leaving audiences questioning her true intentions. While she serves as Galactus’s herald, her motivations remain unclear. "You're not sure where she stands. Does she stand with her boss, or is she just doing what she's told?" Garner adds.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is set to premiere in theaters on July 25, promising an exciting new chapter in the MCU. With its rich storytelling and complex characters, the film is expected to captivate both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
