Peter Andre Embarks on New Acting Venture Following Film Controversy
Peter Andre, the singer-songwriter who dominated the charts in the 1990s, is set to appear in a new television drama, marking his return to acting after a recent film role sparked considerable controversy. Andre will be starring in "The Sunshine Murders," a murder mystery drama scheduled to air on Channel 5.
The news comes months after Andre faced criticism for his involvement in the film "Jafaican." In the film, Andre played a con artist who attempts to infiltrate Jamaican culture to execute a scam. The trailer depicted Andre wearing dreadlocks and adopting a Jamaican accent, which drew heavy criticism across social media platforms, with many branding the plot as "outrageous".
A Fresh Start in "The Sunshine Murders"
Despite the backlash, Andre is moving forward with his acting career. He first hinted at his role in "The Sunshine Murders" in his column for OK! Magazine last October, stating: "I have also got a part in a new Channel 5 drama as one of the lead characters, which I’m excited about. I can’t reveal the name of it just yet or give much away, but I start filming next month and can’t wait to get stuck in. Watch this space!"
Now, behind-the-scenes images have emerged, offering a glimpse of Andre in his new role. The series, produced by Cork Films, boasts a star-studded cast, including English acting legend Stephanie Beacham, Camilla Rutherford of "Dimensions" fame, Nick Moran, known for his role in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," and Nina Wadia from "EastEnders."
One photograph shows Andre alongside Stephanie Beacham, who plays Lady Gloria Whitten-Soames. Andre is seen in a tracksuit, while Beacham is in full costume. Another image captures Andre in the dressing room with his co-stars, accompanied by his son, Junior, who visited his father on set.
From Pop Star to Pathologist
In "The Sunshine Murders," Andre takes on a dramatically different persona: a Greek pathologist named George Constantinos. He will be seen in the professional attire of a medical examiner, tasked with investigating the murder victims. The official poster for the series features Andre in a white lab coat and blue rubber gloves. Further details about the plot are currently under wraps.
Addressing the "Jafaican" Controversy
Andre's role in "The Sunshine Murders" offers him a chance to redeem himself in the eyes of the public after the negative response to "Jafaican." In the film, Andre played Gary Buckle, also known as Gazza.
Following the online outcry, Andre defended the film. In an interview with Channel 7 in Australia, he addressed the controversy surrounding his portrayal of a Jamaican character. He acknowledged the mixed feedback and stated, "Well, to be fair, I mean, I think it’s good to get all sorts of feedback. I mean, this is not … it’s my first lead role, but I’ve done quite a few roles before. And all of them, I’ve played different characters."
Andre emphasised that acting allows him to explore different roles and that he found the film "light-hearted" and "funny," aligning with the kind of films he enjoys watching. He also praised the director, Fredi Nwaka, for giving him the opportunity to play a character that was "very, very different."
Andre also addressed the controversy, stating that there was "never the intention" to "genuinely offend" anyone. He referenced his 1996 re-release of "Get Down On It" with Kool & The Gang, where he wore an Afro wig in the music video.
He expressed surprise that "Jafaican" caused more controversy than his role in Nwaka's previous film, "On the Other Foot" (2022), where he played a member of the EDL. He reiterated that he and the team are willing to listen to concerns and that they never intended to cause harm.
A Look Back at Andre's Acting Career
Before "Jafaican," Andre's acting resume included various film and television roles. While he is well-known for appearing in reality TV shows, such as "I’m A Celebrity" and fly-on-the-wall series with his former wife Katie Price, he has also taken on roles in films like "The Inheritance" (2019) and "SnapCatch" (2023). He also played Vince Fontaine and Teen Angel in "Grease" on the West End stage.
"The Sunshine Murders" presents Andre with a new opportunity to showcase his acting abilities and move beyond the recent controversy.
