James Cameron's Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third instalment in the groundbreaking Avatar franchise, is generating significant buzz even before its December cinema release. The trailer has landed, and one character in particular is already proving a hit with fans: Varang, the leader of the new Mangkwan clan, also known as the Ash People.

A Fiery New Presence: Varang

Oona Chaplin, known for her role in Game of Thrones, portrays Varang, and her brief but impactful appearance in the trailer has ignited excitement. Varang is depicted as a formidable and aggressive leader, and her chilling warning to Kiri (Sigourney Weaver) – "Your goddess has no dominion here" – has sent shivers down the spines of viewers.

Fans have been quick to express their enthusiasm for the character online. One fan account proclaimed that Varang is "going to be one of the best antagonists of cinema history." Another added, "She's gonna be such a sick villain." Others have commented on her charisma and the intriguing concept of a Na'vi who has rejected Eywa, Pandora's spiritual entity.

Exploring New Cultures and Perspectives

Cameron himself has hinted at the complex nature of the new characters and cultures that will be introduced in Fire and Ash. Speaking at the D23 Disney fan event, he teased a character that audiences would "love to hate," promising a deeper exploration of Pandora with new environments, creatures, and biomes.

Chaplin has offered further insight into Varang's motivations, explaining that the Mangkwan clan's decision to turn away from Eywa stems from "unresolved trauma" following a natural disaster. She told Empire magazine: "She basically goes towards a different power, and tries to harness that, and in so doing kind of raises her people out of misery." Chaplin emphasised that Varang sees herself as the hero of her people, saving them from starvation and despair.

Cameron has also indicated that Avatar 3 will present a more nuanced perspective on the Na'vi. He aims to move beyond the simplistic portrayal of humans as negative and Na'vi as positive, instead exploring the flaws and complexities within both cultures. He told 20 Minutes magazine: "In Avatar 3 we will do the opposite. We will also explore new worlds, while continuing the story of the main characters."

The Story So Far and What's to Come

Avatar: Fire and Ash will see Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri's (Zoe Saldaña) family grappling with grief following the death of their son Neteyam (Jamie Flatters). As conflict between the RDA and the Pandorans intensifies, the arrival of the Mangkwan clan promises to further complicate matters.

Cameron has described the upcoming films as the "best" in the series, suggesting that the previous instalments were merely setting the stage for a grander narrative.

Early Reactions and High Expectations

Those lucky enough to have seen the trailer early have been showering it with praise. Film critic Austin Burke tweeted that the visuals are "somehow on another level," predicting that the film will be the "biggest movie of 2025." Another critic declared it "going to be the best film of the year," while others described themselves as "breathless" and marvelled at Cameron's visual mastery.

Comparisons have been drawn to films such as Last of the Mohicans and Empire Strikes Back, with one fan suggesting that the film will feature "giant action set pieces" and even more stunning visuals than Avatar: The Way of Water.

The Future of Pandora

The success of Avatar: The Way of Water, which became the third highest-grossing film of all time, has paved the way for Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, scheduled for release in December 2029 and December 2031 respectively.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is scheduled to be released in cinemas on December 19, 2025. The film promises to be a visually stunning and emotionally resonant experience, further expanding the rich and immersive world of Pandora.
