A New Chapter for Buffy the Vampire Slayer in Comic Books

The world of comic books has long been a place where beloved characters and stories can continue to grow and evolve beyond their original medium. For fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this is especially true, as the franchise has seen multiple iterations across different publishers. Now, Dynamite Entertainment has entered the fray, becoming the latest home for Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics with the announcement of two interconnected titles: Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel.

Both titles will be written by Kelly Thompson, known for her work on Absolute Wonder Woman and Birds of Prey. She will also be joined by David Nakayama for cover art. While interior artists have yet to be revealed, the creative team behind these new comics is already generating excitement among fans.

At this point, details about the content of the new series remain limited. However, it is clear that the stories will follow the tightly woven continuity of the original TV series. Based on the artwork provided by Nakayama, it appears that the comics are set in the classic Buffy era rather than the time period of the upcoming Hulu revival series.

Thompson expressed her deep connection to the Buffy universe in a recent statement. “In my early days trying to figure out how to be a writer and what stories mattered to me and why — no heroine quite broke through for me like Buffy Summers,” she said. “She was somehow everything my young geek heart had always wanted but hadn’t known to ask for. Something about that delicate alchemy of horror, fantasy, and comedy paired with a hero so pure of heart and yet flawed and relatable was… impossible to deny.”

She continued, “I fell deeply in love with Buffy, and following that, her whole world. Her ex-boyfriend is now a supernatural detective in Los Angeles you say? Inject it directly into my veins! But unlike a lot of other worlds I loved, the world of Buffy and Angel somehow never fell to the wayside. I could always come back to it and find something new, or something I’d missed, or something I needed. And I hope this new story we’re telling can do the same for old and new fans everywhere.”

Nate Cosby, the editor at Dynamite, echoed Thompson’s enthusiasm. “There was one name on my wish list of writers for Buffy: Kelly Thompson. There was one name on my wish list of writers for Angel: Kelly Thompson. Her passion for these characters is second-to-none. The interweaving story she’s crafted for both books is going to knock everyone's socks off.”

Before Dynamite, the rights to the Buffy franchise were held by Dark Horse and BOOM! Studios. Dark Horse published Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 8 and its sequels, continuing the TV series' storyline with the involvement of creator Joss Whedon. Meanwhile, BOOM! Studios released a 2019 reboot that took inspiration from the Ultimate Universe concept. It remains unclear whether Dynamite’s new comics will align with the events of the Dark Horse series or serve as an alternate sequel to the original TV show.

Dynamite has hinted that more information about the creative teams and release dates will be announced soon. Fans are eagerly awaiting further details about what this new chapter in the Buffy saga will bring.

For those interested in diving deeper into the Buffy universe, there are plenty of resources available. From the top 15 episodes of the classic series to discussions on the implications of the upcoming Hulu revival, there's much to explore. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to the world of Buffy, the return of the Slayer in comic form promises to be an exciting development.
