Introducing the New Cast of ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’

Marvel Studios has finally revealed the cast for its highly anticipated remake, Fantastic Four: First Steps. After years of anticipation, speculation, and delays, the film is set to debut in theaters on July 25, 2025. This new version brings fresh faces to the iconic roles of Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm.

This isn’t the first time the Fantastic Four have appeared on the big screen. The 2005 and 2007 films featured Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, and Michael Chiklis—long before Evans became a household name as Captain America. A 2015 reboot with Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, and Jamie Bell failed to resonate with audiences. However, after Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox in 2019, the characters officially returned to Marvel Studios, setting the stage for this new chapter.

Meet the Stars of the New Film

The casting announcement was made on February 14, 2024, coinciding with Valentine’s Day. The cast includes:

  • Pedro Pascal as Mr. Fantastic/Reed Richards
  • Vanessa Kirby as The Invisible Woman/Sue Storm
  • Joseph Quinn as The Human Torch/Johnny Storm
  • Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing/Ben Grimm

Each actor brings a unique background to their respective roles. Vanessa Kirby recently played the White Widow in Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One and earned an Oscar nomination for her role in Pieces of a Woman. Joseph Quinn gained fame as Eddie Munson in Stranger Things Season 4 and also appeared in the Gladiator sequel and the Quiet Place prequel.

Pedro Pascal had long been in talks to play Mr. Fantastic, with negotiations progressing in the months leading up to the announcement. He is currently filming The Last of Us Season 2. Ebon Moss-Bachrach, known for his role in The Bear, was a late addition to the cast, having previously won an Emmy and Golden Globe for his performance in the series.

Behind the Scenes Casting Decisions

Before the final casting decisions were made, Marvel conducted secret screen tests for the role of Reed Richards. Christopher Abbott and Jamie Dornan reportedly participated. The studio sought a “bigger name” and approached Jake Gyllenhaal, but he reportedly wanted too much money. Kevin Feige expressed concerns about the cast being “way too white,” prompting efforts to diversify the lineup.

Jack Quaid was a popular fan choice for the role of Johnny Storm, but he denied the rumors on Twitter, stating, “No, not playing Johnny Storm.” John Krasinski had been a favorite for the role of Mr. Fantastic, especially after his appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, he confirmed that there are no ongoing discussions about continuing the role in the future.

Director and Production Details

Directed by Matt Shakman, Fantastic Four: First Steps marks a significant shift for the filmmaker, who previously directed nine episodes of WandaVision on Disney+. He left a Star Trek sequel to take on the challenge of helming the new film. According to reports, production is expected to begin in early 2024.

Shakman described the opportunity as “just too hard to pass up” in an interview with The Wrap. His vision for the film is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the beloved superhero team, integrating them into the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe.

What Fans Can Expect

With the release date set for July 25, 2025, fans are eagerly awaiting the next chapter in the Fantastic Four story. The new cast brings a mix of established actors and rising stars, each bringing their own interpretation to these iconic characters. As the film prepares to make its debut, excitement continues to build around what promises to be a major addition to the MCU.
