Jacob Elordi, the Australian actor who captivated audiences as a charming aristocrat in Saltburn, is taking on a drastically different role: Frankenstein's monster. This marks a significant departure from his previous work and sees him stepping into the realm of classic horror.

Elordi's Transformation

The first glimpses of Elordi in Guillermo del Toro's upcoming Frankenstein adaptation reveal a stark transformation. Pale-faced and bearing visible scars, he is seen cloaked in a mask and hood, hinting at the creature's tormented existence. The trailer, released recently, further amplified the anticipation with the monster's guttural roar and unsettling voice.

Elordi, known for his role in the American drama series Euphoria, revealed that he drew inspiration from Boris Karloff's iconic portrayal of the monster in the 1930s. Initially hesitant to be influenced by previous interpretations, Elordi sought guidance from director del Toro.

He recounted his conversation, explaining his initial desire to create a unique interpretation. Del Toro, however, encouraged him to immerse himself in the history of the character. Elordi subsequently watched numerous Frankenstein films, absorbing the nuances of past performances. He was particularly drawn to Karloff's portrayal, noting "Something in his gaze, something in the way that he moves…. The biggest thing was just immersing myself in the world of these creatures."

A Classic Reimagined

Mary Shelley's 1818 novel, Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus, tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates a creature through a scientific experiment piecing together different body parts. The story explores themes of ambition, creation, and the consequences of playing God.

Frankenstein's monster has become a cultural icon, appearing in over 300 films. Some of the most memorable portrayals include Boris Karloff's in Frankenstein (1931), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), and Son of Frankenstein (1939), as well as Robert De Niro's interpretation in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994).

Del Toro's Vision and Casting Choices

Del Toro's adaptation, slated for release in November, boasts a stellar cast. Oscar Isaac plays Victor Frankenstein, while Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, and Charles Dance take on supporting roles.

Andrew Garfield was originally cast as the monster but had to withdraw due to scheduling conflicts. Elordi, with his height of 6ft 5in, which is closer to the 8ft description in the novel, was quickly chosen as his replacement.

Del Toro expressed his enthusiasm for Elordi's casting, stating, "Andrew Garfield stepping out and Jacob coming in. I mean, it was like Jacob is the most perfect actor for the creature, and we have a supernaturally good connection. It’s like, very few words. Very few things I have to say, and he does it."

The Make-up Artist's Perspective

Mike Hill, the film's make-up artist, highlighted Elordi's unique physical attributes that made him ideal for the role. He described Elordi's "gangliness and his wrists" as particularly appealing, noting a certain "looseness" in his movements.

Hill also observed Elordi's ability to convey deep emotion, saying, "Then he has these real sombre moments where he watches you really deftly, and his eyelids are low, with the long lashes like Karloff. I was like, ‘I don’t know who else you could get with a physicality like this’."

He further commented on Elordi's innocent demeanour contrasted by his imposing frame: "His demeanour is innocent, but it’s encompassed in a 6ft 5in frame. He could really do a lot of damage if this man really wanted to be a bad guy."

Elordi's Rising Star

Elordi's career has been on a steady rise. He received a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Felix Catton in Saltburn. He also portrayed Elvis Presley in Sofia Coppola's Priscilla and played the lead role in the miniseries adaptation of The Narrow Road to the Deep North. His diverse roles demonstrate his versatility as an actor, and his upcoming portrayal of Frankenstein's monster promises to be another captivating performance.
