Netflix's Pride And Prejudice Cast Has Me Cautiously Optimistic, But I'm Still Scarred By What The Streamer Did With Jane Austen's Persuasion

The world of television and film is rife with adaptations of beloved books. These adaptations often walk a tightrope, attempting to satisfy both ardent fans of the original text and newcomers unfamiliar with the source material. Jane Austen's novels, in particular, have been frequent targets for adaptation, with varying degrees of success. Following their 2022 film, Persuasion, Netflix is now embarking on a limited series adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, a prospect that has elicited a mixture of anticipation and trepidation.

A Promising Cast for Pride and Prejudice

News of Netflix's six-part limited series, touted as a faithful adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, has been met with considerable excitement from fans of the novel. While the 2005 film starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen remains popular, the promise of a more faithful rendition is enticing.

The cast list suggests that this adaptation aims to be the most accurate since the beloved 1995 BBC miniseries. Emma Corrin, known for her performance in The Crown, appears well-suited to the role of Elizabeth Bennet. Jack Lowden, of Slow Horses, seems capable of capturing Mr. Darcy's characteristic brooding and yearning.

The core Bennet family has also been cast:

  • Freya Mavor as Jane Bennet
  • Hopey Parish as Mary Bennet
  • Hollie Avery as Kitty Bennet
  • Rhea Norwood as Lydia Bennet
  • Olivia Colman as Mrs. Bennet
  • Rufus Sewell as Mr. Bennet
  • Anjana Vasan as Mrs. Gardiner
  • Sebastian Armesto as Mr. Gardiner

The inclusion of all four Bennet sisters and both parents is encouraging. The casting of Anjana Vasan as Mrs. Gardiner, at only 38, is particularly noteworthy. This suggests a portrayal closer to the book, where she serves as a young confidante to Elizabeth and Jane, rather than the older interpretations often seen on screen.

Other key characters have also been cast:

  • Daryl McCormack as Mr. Bingley
  • Louis Partridge as Mr. Wickham
  • Siena Kelly as Caroline Bingley
  • Fiona Shaw as Lady Catherine de Bourgh
  • Rosie Cavaliero as Lady Lucas
  • Justin Edwards as Sir William Lucas
  • Saffron Coomber as Mrs. Hurst
  • James Dryden as Mr. Hurst
  • James Northcote as Colonel Forster
  • Eloise Webb as Harriet Forster
  • Isabella Sermon as Georgiana Darcy

While Charlotte Lucas (played by Claudie Blakley in the 2005 film and Lucy Scott in the 1995 BBC series) is not explicitly listed, her inclusion is almost certain in a faithful adaptation. The same is true for Mr. Collins (played by Tom Hollander in 2005 and David Bamber in 1995). The addition of Colonel Fitzwilliam would further solidify the adaptation's commitment to accuracy.

The Shadow of Persuasion

Despite the optimism surrounding the Pride and Prejudice casting, the memory of Netflix's Persuasion (2022) lingers. While some viewers who were unfamiliar with the book found the film enjoyable, those who cherished the source material were often disappointed.

Persuasion is admittedly a challenging novel to adapt. The narrative relies heavily on the introspective nature of Anne Elliot, a heroine who suppresses her feelings, and a hero who is, by his own admission, "resentful" for a significant portion of the story. Furthermore, the pivotal event that sets the story in motion occurs years before the novel's opening.

The Netflix adaptation, however, was criticised for seemingly attempting to transform Persuasion into another Pride and Prejudice, casting Anne Elliot in the mould of Elizabeth Bennet. The issue wasn't necessarily the modernised dialogue or casting choices, but rather the fundamental portrayal of the leading lady. Even the highly anticipated adaptation of Captain Wentworth's iconic letter failed to deliver.

The concern is that Netflix's Pride and Prejudice may suffer a similar fate, misrepresenting Elizabeth Bennet in a way that alienates fans of the novel.

Satisfying Your Austen Fix While You Wait

While production on Pride and Prejudice has commenced, the release date for the six-part limited series remains unknown. In the meantime, there are several other Jane Austen adaptations available to stream.

  • The 1995 BBC production of Pride and Prejudice is available on Hulu.
  • The 2005 film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice can be found on Prime Video and HBO Max.
  • The 2008 limited series version of Sense and Sensibility is also on Hulu.
  • The 2020 film adaptation of Emma (starring Anya Taylor-Joy) and the limited series (starring Romola Garai and Jonny Lee Miller) are available on Peacock.
  • Clueless, a modern retelling of Emma, can be streamed on Paramount+.

For those seeking more unconventional adaptations, the Lizzie Bennet Diaries and Emma Approved web series can be found on YouTube. The 2008 miniseries of Persuasion is available on Prime Video. While some prefer the 1995 adaptation with Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds, the 2008 version is generally considered superior to the 2022 Netflix film.
