"Superman" Flops Abroad: Is Anti-Americanism to Blame?

The latest DC Universe film, featuring Superman, has enjoyed considerable success in the United States, amassing $253 million. However, its performance internationally has been less stellar. James Gunn, the writer-director behind the film, has offered some insights into this disparity.

International Appeal of Superman

Gunn suggests that Superman's relative unfamiliarity in some international markets compared to Batman could be a contributing factor. He explained that Superman isn't as universally recognised as a major superhero in all parts of the world, which inevitably affects the film's reception.

Global Sentiment and Box Office Performance

Another factor Gunn highlighted was the prevailing anti-American sentiment in various parts of the globe. He acknowledged that this sentiment isn't beneficial for the film's international performance.

Despite these challenges, the film, starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, dominated the box office during its second weekend. In addition to its impressive domestic earnings, the film has generated $173 million internationally, bringing its global total to over $426 million.

The Bigger Picture: DC Universe Reboot

Gunn, who, alongside Peter Safran, took the reins of DC Studios in November 2022, is spearheading a reboot of the DC Universe. This ambitious project encompasses interconnected films and television series planned for release over several years. Their strategic plan, known as "Gods and Monsters," commenced with the animated series Creature Commandos.

While Creature Commandos isn't essential to understanding the broader narrative, the new Superman film and the second season of the Max original series Peacemaker, scheduled to premiere on August 21st, are considered significant in establishing the overarching storyline.

Future DCU Projects

Looking ahead, the next DCU film slated for release is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin. This film is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on June 26, 2026. Furthermore, a Wonder Woman movie is currently in the writing phase.

Positive Trends and Key Markets

Despite the challenges in some international markets, Gunn remains optimistic. He noted that the film's international performance is showing improvement, with strong weekday numbers. This suggests positive word-of-mouth is spreading, which Gunn considers crucial for long-term success. He also highlighted that the film is performing particularly well in certain countries, including Brazil and the United Kingdom.

Trump Era Impact

The administration of former President Donald Trump significantly altered the global landscape through actions such as withdrawing from international treaties and alliances. Research indicated that overall views of the United States had declined during his second term, although the specific impact of this on moviegoers' choices remains unclear.

Gunn's Perspective

Having previously directed superhero films such as Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy and DC's The Suicide Squad, Gunn has extensive experience in the genre. He described the success of the new Superman film as "incredibly overwhelming," indicating his satisfaction with the project's performance thus far. The overall reception suggests a promising start for this new iteration of the iconic hero.
