The Batman 2 release date, cast, plot, and everything else you need to know about the upcoming DC movie

Despite earlier concerns about delays and potential cancellation, production on The Batman 2 is progressing, with a script now delivered to DC and Warner Bros. Fans eagerly anticipating the next instalment of the Dark Knight's saga will, however, need to exercise patience, as the film is still some time away from gracing cinema screens.

Matt Reeves is confirmed to be returning to the director's chair, co-writing the screenplay with Mattson Tomlin. Robert Pattinson will, of course, reprise his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman. It's worth remembering that The Batman universe operates independently from the broader DC cinematic universe, existing as its own entity alongside The Penguin series and other potential spin-offs.

Information regarding the sequel remains somewhat limited, but here's a breakdown of what we know so far, including potential cast members, plot clues, and projected release timelines. Be aware that the following may contain minor spoilers for The Penguin series.

Release Date: A Long Wait Ahead

The current scheduled release date for The Batman 2 is 1st October 2027. This is a significant delay from the initial plan, which originally aimed for an October 2025 release. This was then pushed to October 2026, before the current 2027 date. Given that filming isn't anticipated to commence until 2026, further postponements, while not desired, cannot be entirely ruled out.

Trailer Speculation: When Might We See a Glimpse?

With production not slated to begin until 2026, a trailer is unlikely to surface before 2027. However, the first trailer for The Batman arrived relatively early, premiering at DC FanDome in August 2020, just seven months after filming commenced in January 2020. If a similar timeline is followed, we might anticipate a trailer in mid-to-late 2026, once the cameras are rolling.

Cast Expectations: Familiar Faces and Potential Newcomers

The most certain casting news is the return of Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman. The finale of The Penguin series also offered a hint, with Sofia Falcone receiving a letter from her half-sister, Selina Kyle, while at Arkham Asylum. This opens the possibility of Sofia appearing in The Batman 2. Colin Farrell has also confirmed his return as Oswald "Oz" Cobblepot/The Penguin.

Another character whose return has been heavily speculated about is Barry Keoghan's Joker. Although a scene featuring him in The Batman was ultimately cut and later released online, Keoghan has expressed interest in reprising the role.

Based on available information and speculation, here's a potential cast list:

  • Robert Pattinson – Bruce Wayne/Batman
  • Andy Serkis – Alfred Pennyworth
  • Jeffrey Wright – Jim Gordon
  • Zoë Kravitz – Selina Kyle/Catwoman
  • Colin Farrell – Oz Cobb/The Penguin
  • Cristin Milioti – Sofia Falcone

Plot Theories: Hints and Possibilities

In June 2025, reports indicated that Matt Reeves had submitted his script for The Batman 2. Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin even shared a photo of the finished script, albeit with the first page obscured. While Warner Bros. has yet to issue an official statement, reports suggest the studio is very pleased with the script.

The five-year gap between The Batman and its sequel (assuming the 2027 release date holds) is considerable. Regarding the plot, The Penguin series offers some clues, as it takes place after the events of The Batman but before The Batman 2. The series concludes with Sofia Falcone receiving a letter from Selina Kyle, and the Bat-Signal illuminating the Gotham sky.

While unsubstantiated, some fans speculated that Dr. Julian Rush, Sofia's psychiatrist, was being positioned to become Scarecrow, but this was later dismissed by the showrunner.

The deleted scene featuring Barry Keoghan's Joker in The Batman, where he appears to steal paperclips from Batman's file, hints at a potential escape from Arkham. Even though Keoghan has expressed uncertainty about reprising the role, it's conceivable that Matt Reeves could centre The Batman 2 around a large-scale breakout from Arkham Asylum.

Robert Pattinson has described the sequel as "cool," and Colin Farrell has confirmed he will feature in "five or six" scenes.

It's also important to remember that The Batman universe is distinct from the new DC Universe (DCU) spearheaded by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Therefore, the events of films like Superman, Supergirl, and Lanterns will not impact The Batman 2. Although Gunn has stated that he wouldn't "rule out" integrating the DCU and DC Studios (where Reeves' Batman universe exists), it's more likely that the DCU will have its own separate, and tonally different, Batman.
