A New Era for the Fantastic Four

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is set to welcome one of its most anticipated films this summer. The Fantastic Four: First Steps is finally making its way to theaters on July 25, and fans have been eagerly waiting for this moment. Before the general public gets a chance to see the film, select critics have already viewed it, and the initial reviews are proving to be overwhelmingly positive. Directed by Matt Shakman, the movie features an ensemble cast including Pedro Pascal as Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm. Julia Garner brings the Silver Surfer to life, while Ralph Ineson plays the powerful Galactus.

This film marks a significant milestone for the MCU, as it has long been considered one of the most anticipated releases of 2025. The first wave of reviews suggests that fans will be in for a treat when they watch the film this weekend.

Critical Acclaim and Positive Reception

While Rotten Tomatoes has not yet released its official score, early reviews indicate that First Steps is poised to receive a strong rating. Julian Roman of The Hollywood Reporter praised the film, stating that it "finally does justice" to the iconic superhero team after years of unsuccessful attempts to bring them to the big screen. Scoring the film a 3.5/5, he wrote, "The Fantastic Four: First Steps fulfills the comic book vision of legendary creators Stan Lee and Jack Kirby after decades of cinematic failures. The beloved superheroes are instantly recognizable with superb casting and a retro-futuristic '60s production design that looks incredible."

Another positive review came from The Hollywood Reporter, which hailed the film as breaking the long-standing "cinematic curse" surrounding the Fantastic Four. The publication noted that the film's back-to-basics approach suggests that Marvel has learned from its recent box office challenges. Similarly, Slant Magazine highlighted the film’s heartfelt and expansive treatment of the superhero family, calling it the kind of big-screen experience the characters deserve.

A Fresh Take on the Superhero Genre

The Telegraph went even further, calling First Steps the best Marvel film of the year and arguably the best in a decade. Meanwhile, TheWrap offered a playful critique of the MCU’s past entries while still praising the film. They wrote, "Matt Shakman has done something Marvel Studios doesn’t do very well anymore. He’s made a superhero movie that embraces the 'super' part. And the 'hero' part. And the 'movie' part."

These glowing reviews suggest that Marvel Studios is in a good position following the release of First Steps. Although the box office performance will ultimately determine the film’s success, strong critical reception is a promising sign. This is especially important given the recent success of DC’s Superman and the competition it presents.

A Bright Future for the Fantastic Four in the MCU

Beyond its immediate success, First Steps also sets the stage for the future of the Fantastic Four within the MCU. The cast has already confirmed that they will return for two upcoming Avengers films: Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. These films are expected to play a major role in the next phase of the MCU, with Doctor Doom (played by Robert Downey Jr.) being one of the team's most iconic villains.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to open in theaters on December 18, 2026, while First Steps will debut on July 25. With such a strong start, the Fantastic Four seem poised to become a central part of the MCU’s future, bringing their unique brand of storytelling and action to audiences around the world.
