The Fantastic Four Make Their MCU Debut in 'First Steps'

The long-awaited arrival of Marvel's First Family, the Fantastic Four, has finally arrived with the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Directed by Matt Shakman, this film marks a significant milestone for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), introducing Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Joseph Quinn), and Ben Grimm/The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) to the ever-expanding cinematic universe. The film blends a comprehensive origin story with intense action, setting up one of the most harrowing battles the team has ever faced against the planet-consuming space god Galactus (Ralph Ineson).

Ahead of the movie’s theatrical debut, Steve Weintraub had the chance to sit down with the core four in the Baxter Building. During the conversation, the cast shared their excitement about joining the MCU, working alongside its legendary actors, and even revealed some shocking deleted scenes.

Deleted Scenes That Left the Cast "Gutted"

One of the most surprising revelations came from Vanessa Kirby, who expressed her disappointment over a scene involving Sue Storm and Mole Man. The scene, which was shot in the mines of northern England, depicted Sue having a drink with Mole Man, though she couldn’t have whiskey because she was pregnant. Kirby loved the scene, describing it as a glimpse into Sue’s working life and her ability to connect with supervillains on an emotional level. However, due to time constraints, the scene didn’t make the final cut. “It just represented Sue's working life,” she said. “Maybe the sequel.”

Other deleted scenes included a 35-minute intimacy scene between Ben Grimm and another character, a group ayahuasca trip before heading to space, and even a charming badminton scene that the cast remembered fondly. While these scenes didn’t make the final cut, the cast hinted that they might resurface in future projects.

Pedro Pascal Shares a "Big Spoiler" for 'Avengers: Doomsday'

As the Fantastic Four prepare to join the ranks of the MCU’s greatest heroes in Avengers: Doomsday, the cast shared some exciting details about their upcoming collaboration. Pedro Pascal teased a “big spoiler” during the interview, revealing that there will be a change in the color of the carpet in the Baxter Building. “It’s a little renovation,” he said. Ebon Moss-Bachrach confirmed that fans would see the updated space in the end credits.

The experience of working with MCU legends was also a highlight for the cast. Vanessa Kirby described the living room in the Baxter Building as “not for four people only,” emphasizing how spacious and impressive the set felt. Joseph Quinn added that it was nice to host the other actors, creating a sense of familiarity and comfort on set.

A Truly Ambitious Project

When asked about their first impressions of the script for Avengers: Doomsday, the cast admitted it was both exciting and challenging. Pedro Pascal praised the direction and tone of the film, while Ebon Moss-Bachrach noted the complexity of the script, which included numerous code names and characters. Joseph Quinn called the project “definitely ambitious,” acknowledging the difficulty of writing for such a large ensemble. Despite the challenges, the cast felt honored to be part of something so grand and intricate.

Vanessa Kirby likened the process to “making a really intricate dish,” highlighting the careful balance required to bring together so many characters and storylines. She emphasized the collaborative nature of the work and the excitement of being part of such a massive project.

Looking Forward to the Future

With The Fantastic Four: First Steps now in theaters, the team is eager to see where their journey takes them next. As they prepare to join the Avengers, the cast remains optimistic about the future of the MCU and the possibilities that lie ahead. Whether through new stories, expanded universes, or unexpected twists, the Fantastic Four are ready to make their mark on the world of superheroes.

Fans can catch The Fantastic Four: First Steps in theaters starting July 24.
