Exciting Box Office Performance for 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps'
This weekend, the box office is set to experience another surge with the release of Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The film is expected to generate between $190 million and $210 million globally. This comes after the impressive success of DC Studios’ Superman, which has already surpassed $409 million worldwide. In comparison, First Steps had a global opening around $220 million, making it a strong contender in the current cinematic landscape.
The international box office projection for First Steps stands at $90 million to $100 million, with potential for further growth if family audiences embrace the movie's themes. Domestically, the film is anticipated to earn between $100 million and $110 million across 4,100 theaters in the U.S. and Canada. The film features a stellar cast including Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Julia Garner, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. It also offers premium viewing experiences such as PLFs, Dolby, Imax, Dbox, and 4DX, enhancing the overall cinematic appeal.
Advance tickets for the film went on sale seven weeks ago, and domestic presales have reached $20 million. This figure is comparable to the presales of Superman ($125 million) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($118.4 million) before their respective openings.
A New Era for Marvel’s Fantastic Four
What makes this reboot significant is that it marks the first time that Kevin Feige's Marvel Studios has taken control of the IP. This includes characters like Dr. Doom, following the Disney-Fox merger. The previous Fantastic Four films from 2005 and 2007 performed well, grossing $333.5 million and $302 million worldwide, respectively. However, they never achieved the same level of success as Spider-Man.
The 2015 reboot by Josh Trank faced significant criticism and only managed to gross around $170 million worldwide. The film was even rumored to have been completely reshot due to its poor reception. With the inclusion of Fox Marvel characters, Marvel now has the opportunity to introduce major villains like Dr. Doom into future projects, as well as fully integrate the X-Men canon into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Strong Competition and Anticipated Success
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is expected to be the biggest opening for Marvel Studios this year, surpassing recent releases like Thunderbolts and Captain America: Brave New World. The last major box office success for the MCU was Deadpool & Wolverine, which opened to $211.4 million in the U.S. and Canada, eventually earning over $1.33 billion worldwide.
Critics have praised First Steps, with the film receiving an 89% certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This is significantly higher than the 9% rating for the 2015 reboot and the 27% and 37% ratings for Tim Story’s earlier films.
Global Release Strategy
The film is being released day-and-date internationally, starting in France, Indonesia, Italy, and the Netherlands on Wednesday. The UK, Australia, Brazil, Germany, Korea, and Mexico will follow on Thursday, with China, India, Japan, Spain, and other markets joining on Friday. By Friday, the film will be available in 100% of offshore markets.
Comparing this to recent releases, Captain America: Brave New World debuted to $95 million in similar overseas markets, while Superman earned $95 million, and Thunderbolts opened to $88 million. Another comparable film, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, launched to $119 million, including $18 million from China.
Regional Performance Expectations
European markets are expected to perform strongly, along with Mexico, Brazil, and Australia. However, Korea faces competition from the local fantasy action film Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy. China remains a soft market, with new local entries not achieving massive returns.
Over the past month, talent from First Steps participated in launch events in Sydney, London, Paris, and Berlin, where extensive footage was shown. Last night, Marvel hosted a lavish Hollywood premiere at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, featuring a pre-party with photo opportunities, a performance by composer Michael Giacchino, and a stunning drone show in the sky.
Critical Acclaim and Audience Reception
The film has received positive reviews from critics, with many highlighting the charismatic cast and stylish approach. As the movie continues to roll out globally, it is expected to make a significant impact on the box office and further solidify Marvel's position in the superhero genre.
