Comic-Con is one of the most anticipated events in the world of pop culture, and this year’s preview night was no different. Attendees had three hours to explore what the San Diego Convention Center has in store for the upcoming five days of festivities. From video games to anime, books to television, the event promises something for everyone.
As the sun set on Wednesday, the Gaslamp Quarter came alive with a mix of locals and visitors from across the country and around the globe. The energy was palpable, and the excitement was evident as people made their way through the area, eager to experience all that Comic-Con has to offer.
Unique Experiences at Comic-Con
One of the standout features of this year's event is the variety of themed experiences available. At the US Grant Hotel, guests can enjoy “digital drinks” and “bit bytes,” including the blue MCP, a floral tequila drink reminiscent of a margarita, and the red ISO, a vodka-based piña colada-flavored cocktail. These unique beverages add an extra layer of fun to the overall experience.
Another exciting addition is the Peacefest, a fan experience inspired by HBO’s “Peacemaker” series. Construction was underway outside Nova SD at 454 Sixth Ave., setting the stage for what promises to be an immersive event. The show will also have a panel in Hall H on Saturday, giving fans a chance to engage with the creators and cast.
In the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, a promotion for Dreamworks' animated film "Bad Guys 2" has been displayed directly on the Gaslamp Quarter sign on Fifth Avenue. This eye-catching display is sure to draw attention from passersby.
A mysterious “Wanted” sign for the new “Red Sonja” movie has also been spotted throughout the area, adding an element of intrigue to the already vibrant atmosphere.
Immersive Activations and Exhibits
Paramount+’s The Lodge activation is one of the most popular attractions at the event. This interactive space allows guests to tour replica sets from iconic movies and TV shows, take photos, and even grab some free swag. Highlights include a scene from 1996’s “Mission: Impossible” where Tom Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt is lowered into a high-security vault. There's also a section dedicated to sports, featuring jerseys from 32 NFL teams, artificial turf, stadium-style seating, and a football throwing contest. Attendees can also enjoy a UEFA Champions League-themed sports bar and watch live games on televisions.
The Pokémon Mega Evolution exhibit at Booth #235 offers a simulated experience where convention-goers can become Pokémon trainers and embark on missions based on the Mega Evolution process from the video game franchise. A massive Poké Ball looms over the left wing of the exhibit hall, drawing in curious attendees.
At Booth #435, two hand-constructed LEGO statues of Steve and a Creeper stand tall, each taking 51 hours to build and using over 13,000 Lego bricks. This impressive display is a must-see for LEGO enthusiasts.
Costume Displays and Fan Interactions
Fans of Star Wars can check out a Cad Bane costume from the show “The Book of Boba Fett” on display in the Star Wars section of the exhibit hall. This is just one of many costume displays that bring the universe to life.
Funko fans are also in for a treat, with a photo op featuring Freddy and Proto at the Funko booth #5145. The fun continues with the Funderdome panel on Thursday, July 24, at 10:30 a.m. in room 6BCF.
For those nostalgic for the “Back to the Future” films, the back of the DeLorean is available for photos at the Hot Wheels section of the convention floor. This iconic vehicle is a favorite among fans and photographers alike.
Creative Displays and Cultural Touches
LEGO has created several scenes from Comic-Con at its booth inside the exhibit hall. Fans can see a large LEGO construction replica of Comic-Con known as LEGO Con. This creative display includes a Lego Gaslamp District sign and a Lego Convention Floor, making it a highlight of the event.
One attendee from Los Angeles, Stacy Shuttleworth, stood out in a sweater showing imagery of the San Diego Convention Center. The sweater comes from Tony Kim’s “Founder’s Collection” from the Hero Within clothing company, adding a personal touch to the overall experience.
