According to recent speculation, his role as Thor might be more substantial than previously thought. This idea was first brought up by Matt Belloni on The Town podcast, where he discussed the possibility that Hemsworth could be the second lead in the movie.
During a conversation with Wall Street Journal reporter Ben Fritz, Belloni mentioned, “He’s got a major role.” While nothing has been officially confirmed, this aligns with other hints and statements from within the MCU. For instance, Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, made remarks at a press event for Fantastic Four: First Steps that suggest long-standing characters like Thor may continue to play key roles in future projects.
Feige emphasized that when great actors portray iconic characters, it can be exciting to see them in different contexts. He also noted that while some roles will eventually be recast, Thor still has time left with Hemsworth. “X-Men is where that will happen,” Feige said, indicating that recasting efforts are likely to begin with that franchise.
In addition to these comments, Hemsworth himself shared a message online that sparked even more interest. It included a 2022 Marvel video celebrating his journey as Thor, along with personal reflections. He wrote, “Playing Thor has been one of the greatest honors of my life. For the last 15 years I’ve held Mjolnir and then Stormbreaker as the God of Thunder, but what made it truly special… was sharing it with all of you. The Scale and Structure of Avengers: Doomsday
The film itself is expected to be a massive undertaking. As the 39th movie in the MCU and the fifth Avengers film following Endgame, Doomsday is set to bring together a vast array of characters. This marks a major shift in the MCU’s direction, especially after the previous plans for the Multiverse Saga were altered.
Originally, Marvel had announced two new Avengers films—The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars—as part of the Multiverse Saga. However, changes occurred when Jonathan Majors faced legal issues and was dropped from the project. Destin Daniel Cretton also left, and Michael Waldron took over as writer. By July 2024, Marvel announced that the Russo brothers would return as directors, Stephen McFeely would rejoin as writer, and Downey would take on the role of Doctor Doom. This led to the rebranding of the film as Avengers: Doomsday.
