Taron Egerton, the celebrated British actor, has recently addressed the persistent rumours linking him to the coveted role of James Bond. Despite being a popular choice amongst fans and bookmakers, Egerton has expressed reservations, suggesting he might not be the right fit for the iconic spy.
Following Daniel Craig's departure from the role after the release of No Time to Die in 2021, speculation has been rife about who will be the next actor to take on the mantle of 007. While many names have been thrown into the ring, Egerton, known for his captivating performances in films like Kingsman and Rocketman, has consistently been a subject of discussion.
However, the 35-year-old actor believes that his own personality and acting style might not align with the requirements of the character. He described himself as "too messy" for the part, implying a lack of the suave and sophisticated demeanour often associated with James Bond.
Speaking to Collider, Egerton stated, "I don't think I'm a good choice for it. I think I'm too messy for that… I really love James Bond and particularly Daniel Craig's tenure. But I think I wouldn't be good at it, and I think there's so many cool, younger actors who would be great for it. I think it would be wasted on me, probably."
He also acknowledged the significant commitment involved in leading the Bond franchise, describing it as "quite an undertaking". Egerton, who won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Elton John in Rocketman, emphasised that he is currently prioritising projects that resonate with him creatively.
"That's not to say that I don't have aspirations and plans and also that I wouldn't be interested in doing something that's more commercial, because of course I would. I think I'm a period in my life where I've been probably following the things that speak to me on a creative level a little bit more, but, you know, I'm sure I won't feel that way forever," he elaborated.
Egerton also wryly noted that he hasn't actually been approached for the role. He seemed to suggest that he has carefully considered the potential implications of taking on such a demanding part, concluding that playing Bond might not ultimately bring him the greatest personal fulfilment. "I do think it's a big old undertaking, it kind of consumes your life, a role like that," he said.
Currently, Egerton is engaged in promoting his new indie crime thriller, She Rides Shotgun, adapted from Jordan Harper's acclaimed novel. He also recently starred in Carry-On, which became one of Netflix's most-watched films.
The Frontrunners for the Next James Bond
Despite Egerton's self-assessment, the search for the next James Bond continues, with several actors emerging as potential candidates. Aaron Taylor-Johnson has consistently been named as a frontrunner, even amidst false reports that he had already secured the role.
According to recent odds from Ladbrokes, Taylor-Johnson is currently the favourite at 8/11, making him the first odds-on contender to succeed Daniel Craig. His recent appearance in 28 Years Later, alongside Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes, has further fuelled speculation.
Other prominent contenders include:
- Callum Turner (5/1): Known for his upcoming role in the A24 supernatural rom-com Eternity, alongside Elisabeth Olsen and Miles Teller.
- Theo James (5/1): Recognised for his role in The Gentlemen.
- Jack Lowden (6/1): Star of Slow Horses and known for his portrayal of Mr. Darcy.
- Harris Dickinson (8/1)
- Tom Holland (8/1)
Egerton's odds, meanwhile, stand at 66/1, having fluctuated throughout the year. He began the year at 80/1, the same odds as Sir David Beckham, and reached his shortest odds of 25/1 after winning his Golden Globe in 2020.
Changes in Creative Control
In a significant development, long-time Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson ceded complete creative control of the film franchise to their producing partners at Amazon MGM Studios earlier this year, reportedly for an additional $1 billion.
This change in power appears to be accelerating the process, with Amazon already announcing David Heyman (of Harry Potter fame) and Amy Pascal (known for her work on Spider-Man) as the new producers overseeing the franchise.
Furthermore, Oscar-nominated director Denis Villeneuve was announced as the director for Bond 26 in June. Broccoli has publicly expressed her support for Villeneuve, describing him as a "fantastic filmmaker." Villeneuve's previous successes include Dune, Blade Runner 2049, and Arrival.
With key members of the creative team now in place, it is anticipated that the casting process will soon commence in earnest. The world eagerly awaits the announcement of the next actor to step into the shoes of James Bond, a role that carries with it both immense prestige and considerable responsibility.
